Earlier this year I was appointed to the City of Huntington Beach's Human Relations Task Force by our city council. I wasn't quite sure what to expect but was interested in furthering the mission of promoting/celebrating diversity in the community and tracking and responding to hate crimes in the city. Today I had the privilege of attending the convening of the California Association of Human Relations Organizations at OC Human Relations to get together with other human relations organizations in Southern California and discuss the successes and challenges of our respective organizations. It was really an amazing experience to spend time with a dedicated group of individuals brainstorming new programs and talking about the challenges we face. I mean, where else can you hear about pilot programs that are bringing restorative justice programs to high schools to combat push-out of students of color, or the HR/community efforts after the deadly beating of Kelly Thomas by Fullerton Police. I left the meeting feeling really fortunate to have the opportunity to be part of these efforts. I can't wait for the next meeting. Enjoy a pic of some of the topics from today..
